Cheerleading skirts are a must for a cheerleader when performing complex routines. They’ll be needed to do many jumps, kicks and stunts. That can expose what’s under their short skirts, so they must wear suitable garments to keep their bodies covered and looking stylish.

Spankies

Spankies are an underpants that go underneath the cheerleading skirt as part of the full uniform. They match the color of the skirt and top and often bear the school’s logo or the team’s name.

These underpants are made of polyester or spandex and are called bloomers, shorties or briefs. Spankies are meant to hide what’s under the skirt and give cheerleaders confidence that nothing they’re wearing is exposed during performances.

Trends in Cheerleading Uniforms

Today’s cheerleading uniforms have a lot more drama than they used to. They’ve changed from a sport that focused on modesty and submission to virtuous service, to a sports-centric world where All-Stars are the athletes, not the sidelines.

The 1980s

During this decade we saw more fitted vest shells, puffy uniform tops, and skirts that were very short with lots of striping. During this time we also saw high white socks and most teams wore soft Nike tennis shoes with their cheer uniforms!

During this decade we saw more variety of emblem fonts, a variety of skirt pleat styles and tight curls in the hair. Uniforms started to look a little more flashy with metallic fabrics and midriff showing uniforms were very popular.
