Cheerleading uniforms are standardized outfits that are used by cheerleaders during games and other events. They typically include the official colors and mascots of the team or school. These outfits make the wearer appear physically attractive and are a great way to express pride for their team.
Cheer uniforms evolved from poodle skirts and bulky sweaters in the early 1900s, to more modest and functional styles in the 1960s and 1970s. During that era, cheerleaders were allowed to sport skirts up to knee length and shirts that displayed their school initials.
Those days gave way to pleated skirts and buttoned-down shirts in the 1980s and 1990s, which allowed cheerleaders to get more comfortable with their movement. In addition, the footwear underwent a metamorphosis from saddle shoes to athletic sneakers.
Today, cheerleading uniforms have come a long way and have become more stylish, functional and comfortable than ever before. Thanks to Kraig Tallman, the designer behind many of the modern-day cheer uniforms, they are streamlined, fitted, and designed with movement in mind.
The National Federation of High Schools and Sports Associations rules state that high school cheer squad tops must cover the midriff with arms at the sides and should have no more than an inch of frontal skin showing during movements. Most American school squads have shell tops that are sleeveless and meet those guidelines.
Besides the shell, many teams have bodysuits that are leotard-like or simply cover the ribcage. These bodysuits can also be worn underneath the shell and are a very versatile piece of clothing in a cheer uniform.
