The cheerleading world is filled with fun stunts, tumble combinations and a variety of jumps. The herkie (or hurdler) is a classic, yet difficult cheerleading jump that requires an athletic build and a certain level of flexibility to achieve. However, the herkie is a staple skill that should be practiced by all cheerleaders to perfect and develop.
The herkie was invented by Lawrence “Herkie” Herkimer, a former cheerleader at Southern Methodist University. He founded the first national cheerleading association and held the first cheerleading camp, paving the way for the sport’s current popularity. He also invented the Herkie jump, the spirit stick and pom-pons, all of which are still cherished and celebrated by today’s cheerleaders.
Herkie also made a significant contribution to the development of the modern cheerleading industry by starting his own company called the Cheerleader Supply Company, which specialized in selling cheer uniforms, pom-pons and megaphones. He became the father of modern cheerleading, making a considerable fortune in the process.
To do a herkie, a cheerleader should start by standing upright with their shoulders pulled back in a relaxed position. They should then hold their arms in either a high V motion or clasped together in front of their chest. Then they should push off the ground with their right leg in a half straddle jump position and then jump into the air, landing softly by bending their weaker knee. The herkie is a great jump to perform during routines because it adds height, speed and intensity.
