How to Make Cheerleading Pom Poms

Cheerleading pom poms are a vital accessory for cheerleaders to help add color and movement to their routines. They can also help emphasize beats in music or chants, aiding in synchronization between cheerleaders. Pom poms can even be used to express team spirit, rally spectators and boost morale. While these colorful accessories can be expensive to purchase, making your own pom poms is quick and easy. This DIY project would be a great addition to any cheerleader’s wardrobe or for groups that need pom poms for parades and other events.

How to Make Cheerleading Pom Poms

To begin, gather your materials. You will need two different colored trash bags, scissors and a pair of large pompoms (the kind that are used to decorate clothing). A bag with a zip top will be the easiest to work with as you won’t have to worry about glue or tape. The pom poms should be made of thicker material than regular pom poms, as they will need to withstand the physical demands of a cheerleader’s routine.

Once you have your materials, start by laying down one of the trash bags. Fold the edges over to the center and mark it with a finger length distance from your thumb and pinky finger. Cut along the marked line to create strips. Then, use the remaining trash bag to roll up the strips, securing the middle area with tape or extra string of paper. When rolled up, the pom poms will have a handle.
