How to Do the Cheerleading Needle

The Needle is a basic cheerleading stunt that requires a lot of balance, flexibility and strength. It is a combination of back bending and the splits, so it’s important to master both individually before trying to combine them into this impressive stunt. If you’re not able to do the needle on your own, you may want to consider joining a stunt group or finding a spotter to assist you in this advanced skill.

Start with major muscle groups, such as your shoulders, torso and thighs. This will warm your muscles up for the more demanding back stretches that will improve your flexibility. Remember to breathe consciously and regularly. With time, the resistance and tightness will release.

Work on the splits and then begin leaning back into straddle stretches slowly, extending the posture each time until you are close to the position of the needle. You should also try to reach the height of your hands on the floor with your legs as you are in the splits (hyperextended). This will help you to get used to balancing yourself in this position while standing upright, rather than sitting on the ground.

Once you’ve mastered the basics, you can work on the more difficult parts of the Needle. It’s helpful to find a partner or practice with an experienced stunt group to help you perfect the technique and ensure your safety. Then when you’re ready, you can perform this incredible stunt in front of your audience and judges!
