Choosing Cheerleading Clothes

The uniforms that cheerleaders wear are an important part of their team’s identity and the image they project to the public. Uniforms can vary from youth leagues to high school, all-star, competitive and collegiate outfits. Choosing the right uniforms is crucial for a cheerleader’s safety, comfort, and performance.

The most common uniforms used are shell tops, liners, and skirts. A shell is a leotard-like undergarment that snaps to the bottom of the uniform skirt and matches the color of the uniform. It may be sleeveless or with sleeves and can be worn over a camisole or bra of the cheerleader’s choice or a bodysuit of the team’s preference. Bodysuits allow the cheerleader to move with more ease in arm movements and eliminate fabric rubbing against the arms during routines. Shells can be adorned with any kind of pattern or design and are usually fitted to the shape of the squad member’s body.

Skirts can be in a variety of styles and sizes but are most commonly pleated skirts that match the colors of the shell or vest. Traditionally the skirt should reach at least mid-thigh to meet the rules set by many high schools and eliminate any bare midriff exposure during cheering.

Shoes are also very important in cheerleading and should be chosen based on the level of athleticism of the squad members and the type of stunts they practice and perform. A good starting point for a beginner cheerleader is a pair of Kaepa or Zephz cheer trainers which are lightweight and can be matched to the teams uniform colors.
