Cheerleading Uniforms Through the Years
Changing fashion trends in cheerleading have meant a change in uniforms. Long gone are the days when girls had to wear short skirts, but they were still acceptable. During the 1980s, cheerleading changed with the emergence of striped taping and pleats. These cheerleading outfits aren’t very different from what they were before. But you might be surprised to know that their uniforms have been updated to better fit today’s trends.
While the modern-day cheerleading uniform features a button-down vest, pom pons were not invented until the 1950s. At the time, pom pons were made of colorful crepe paper, and only became popular after the introduction of vinyl pompoms. This period also saw the most radical changes in cheerleading uniforms, with the addition of animal print fabrics and metallic spandex to make them look more modern. While cheerleading uniforms will always reflect the debated status of the sport, they can still be seen in historical photographs.
The 1970s brought with them the first modern cheerleading uniforms. Jean Lee Originals was the first company to sell these outfits. In the ’80s, they featured a pleated skirt and a double stripe sweater. Harter was the daughter of Arthur V. Harter, who owned the largest sporting goods store in Indiana. The house of Harter Sporting Goods supplied most high schools in the state of Indiana. The company’s uniforms were designed by Harter’s daughter, Jean Lee, and she made the first custom ones for her team.
