A cheerleading scholarship may be awarded based on a number of criteria, including moral character, academic excellence and a commitment to building one’s community. Some scholarships for cheerleaders will require applicants to sit for interviews, while others will request a written essay in response to a prompt. Some scholarships specifically request that a candidate write about their experiences cheerleading, or about how the sport has affected them as a person.
For example, the Foot Locker scholarship awards $3,000 to an athlete with a high GPA who shows excellent sportsmanship and demonstrates that cheerleading is “more than just a sport; it’s a lifestyle.” Some colleges also award their own cheerleading scholarships based on student performance. For instance, the University of Florida gives its full-time cheerleaders a Gatertown Gators Athletic Cheerleading Scholarship. Those receiving the award will have the same access to student-athlete benefits as other members of the team, including meal plans, early class registration, tutoring services and waivers for out-of-state fees.
College cheer coaches seek recruits with advanced tumbling, stunting and dance skills. They also look for a level of professionalism that indicates a candidate can balance her cheerleading commitment with other schoolwork, extracurricular activities and personal obligations. Some elite cheerleaders compete at the COA Ultimate National Championship Competition to earn scholarships.
Maintaining a solid GPA is an important consideration for most college cheerleaders, but it’s even more critical for those competing for scholarships. In NCAA-sanctioned sports, athletes must satisfy certain requirements to remain eligible for their teams, including maintaining a minimum GPA and scoring well on standardized tests. However, long-held rules on amateurism do not apply to cheerleaders, and they are free to sell merchandise and endorse products as social influencers without risk of losing their eligibility for the sport.
