Cheerleading recruiting is a competitive process, and students should make the most of their opportunities to get noticed by college coaches. Getting on a coach’s radar is key to getting recruited to a cheer program and earning a scholarship, so it’s essential to proactively reach out to coaches at colleges that interest you.
Step One: Create a video to showcase your skills
Most college cheer coaches cannot evaluate each student-athlete in person, so they use videos as an alternative. Some schools even require recruits to submit a video before they can try out for the team.
Step Two: Email college coaches at the schools you’re interested in.
College cheer coaches are active throughout the day, so it’s important to proactively contact them with your interest in the program. This is the best way to let them know you’re interested and highlight your cheer skills.
Step Three: Attend clinics hosted by the college.
Cheer clinics are an excellent place to network with coaches and scout the college’s campus. These events also provide an opportunity for coaches to evaluate your performance and help you develop the skills necessary to succeed at cheerleading.
Step Four: Participate in high-level club competitions, especially All-Star and Team USA.
Whether you’re looking to join a traditional cheer squad or an All-Star team, competitions can be a great opportunity for college coaches to see you in action and learn about your character. Athletes who compete in high-level competitions have a better chance of being discovered by college coaches and receiving a scholarship.
