Cheerleading is a fun, high-energy sport that requires athleticism and teamwork. It combines gymnastics, acrobatics and athletic dance to develop an athlete’s strength, flexibility and coordination. It also helps to build confidence and social skills. This hybrid sport can be a great addition to any physical education program.
Classes are offered for all ages and skill levels. Young athletes are taught tumbling, stunts and jumps with an emphasis on safety and proper technique. Beginners and younger athletes will start in the Novice cheerleading program, while advanced students can advance to the Prep cheerleading team. Athletes on the prep and elite level will have the option to compete at regional, state and national competitions. These competitions will have a nominal participation fee and are held at different locations around the country.
Summer cheerleading camps are a great way to take the squad’s skills to the next level and strengthen their bonds as a team. The Universal Cheerleaders Association offers a number of camps, including elite camps and Spirit Xpress camps. The popular UCA camps offer specialized stunt and pyramid training, sideline private coaching and team-building activities. These camps can range from day to overnight camps and many are held on college campuses.
The YMCA offers dance programming for all ages and skill levels. Dance classes help to improve balance, flexibility, coordination and musicality while increasing self-confidence. Students learn the basics of their chosen style and can showcase their work at a bi-annual recital.
