Cheerleading Masks

The masks, made of soft stretch fabric, are a great addition to any cheerleader’s costume. They can be hand washed cold and laid flat to dry or put in a dryer on low heat. They are odour resistant and can be worn all day.

The school district’s decision to allow cheerleaders to forego their masks, while continuing their indoor sports (wrestling and basketball), is inconsistent with the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association’s COVID-19 guidelines. Fellow Central League schools’ cheerleaders, including Marple Newtown and Garnet Valley, do not have this flexibility.

Cheerleading is already a dangerous sport due to its many facets and high risk of concussions, according to a 2021 study published in the Orthapedic Journal of Sports Medicine. Adding the stress of masks, which restricts cardio for tumblers and stunting, could further increase injuries.

In an email to coaches, MSHSAA states that if a cheerleader is injured while wearing a mask, the school’s Catastrophic Insurance will not cover it. MSHSAA believes that allowing cheerleaders to remove their masks during practice and games would violate current recommended social distancing guidelines. It would also open the school up to legal issues and public relations disasters, the email says. Cheerleading coaches, however, disagree with the stance.
