Cheerleading Jump Names

The different types of cheerleading jumps have various names. For example, there is a ‘cheer sit jump,’ which is three jumps in a row. This type of jump is often performed by elite teams. It requires coordination between the legs and arms, and is known as a ‘trick’ jump.

Lawrence Herkimer, a founding member of the National Cheerleading Association, came up with this jump, which was later renamed the Herkie. It is similar to the side-hurdler, but involves holding the arms over the body opposite to the leg underneath. This makes the bent leg point straight down. The spotter would then catch the flyer should she fall.

Another stunt is known as the ‘around the world’. This is similar to the ‘handstand’ except the flyer is held up by the base. In the ‘flyer’ version, the flyer bends one leg in front of them while their other leg is bent. This is done to mimic the Statue of Liberty.

There are also other names for cheerleading jumps. Some cheerleaders call their moves a ‘v motion.’ This means that they alternate between arms and legs in a circular motion. This allows them to rotate their bodies in an elegant manner. They are also known as ‘baskets’, ‘buckets’, or ‘candlesticks.’ A basket toss is a classic stunt, while the cradle catch is an airborne stunt.
