Cheerleading is a Team Sport

cheerleading is a sport

Cheerleading is a team sport, and it requires a great deal of physical exertion. It closely resembles gymnastics and acrobatics. Cheerleaders perform a variety of stunts and actions over the course of a two-and-a-half-minute routine. To perform well, cheerleaders must be well-trained. There are also competitions to prove who is the best cheerleader.

While cheerleading has evolved from its origins in a male-dominated sport, it has faced significant challenges throughout its history. For many years, male cheerleaders were called gay and other derogatory terms, and the sport was only made acceptable after the implementation of the Title IX feminist law in the 1980s. Even as cheerleading became more competitive, the stigma of gender bias continued. In addition, films like “Grease” and “American Beauty” relied on a sexualized portrayal of cheerleaders.

Competitions in cheerleading are held worldwide. There are many local, state and regional competitions. These competitions are a qualifying process for national competitions. Cheerleading was made a championship sport by the NAIA in 2016. Currently, there are 74 universities that sponsor competitive cheerleading programs under NAIA regulations.

Cheerleading is a physical sport, and athletes must be strong and agile to perform. Even though cheerleaders receive training to execute their stunts safely and properly, accidents can still occur, and cheerleaders need to be careful to avoid serious injury.
