Cheerleading Drills For Jumps

Here we will talk about how to strengthen your body to increase your height on jumps. One of the most common jumps is the toe touch, where you do a split (reaching your toes for your hands) in the air. It’s also one of the most difficult, as you need strength and flexibility to achieve lift. Here’s how to perfect your toe touch in 3 stages.

1. Strengthen your legs. Sit on the floor in a full split, or as close to one as you are able. Place you hands behind you for support. Lift your legs about 1 foot off the floor and hold them there for 10 seconds. Release and repeat at least 5 times, taking rest breaks every 2 reps (as needed).

2. Gain flexibility. Now that your legs are warmed up, try some side high kicks. Arms T’d out by your sides kick first 5 times on the left, then 5 on the right, each kick aiming a little closer to your hands than the last.

3. Toe Touch! Using proper prep, bend your knees with straightened back, feet and legs together. Use your leg muscles to thrust up into the air. Don’t reach your arms for your legs; instead bring your legs to your arms. Keep your knees straight, toes pointed, and smile. Do at least 8 toe touches.

Toe touches are far from simple, but with the right amount of practice anyone can learn perfect form. Don’t give up, and practice in front of a mirror when you can to help better your form.
