Cheerleading Cheers For When Your Team Needs to Fight

As a cheerleader, your ultimate goal is to get the fans excited about the game and to fight for your team’s victory. That’s why it’s so important to have a good collection of cheers for all situations. One of the best cheers for when your team needs to pull together and fight is “Go big green – let’s go!”

In the first episode of Cheer, Netflix’s popular new docuseries about a championship cheerleading squad at Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas, an athlete named TT arrives for practice with a back injury that she’s been trying to mask for weeks. She’s also struggling with what her teammates dub ribiosis, the agonizing rib pain that comes from spinning and falling from the air into your teammates’ bony arms—a grueling stunt that’s often repeated in competition.

But despite this inexorable physical pain, many of the athletes in Cheer seem to have found a home in their sport. Despite head coach Monica Aldama’s coldness toward their injuries and abrasive personality, these young women find comfort and community in each other. They push through their pain and each other’s annoyances to achieve their goals, even when it threatens their safety.

Though it’s still mostly seen as window dressing for sporting events, modern cheerleading has developed into a fiercely competitive sport. With millions of people across the country participating in youth rec, all star and school cheerleading, as well as collegiate varsity and club sports like STUNT, it’s clear that cheering is more than just a pretty face in sparkly uniforms. It’s about pushing yourself to your limit, learning to be proud of success and accepting defeat—and fighting for what you believe in.
