Cheerleading is one of the most expensive high school activities a child can participate in, and yet it can also be the most rewarding. Despite the financial commitment, cheerleaders learn a variety of life skills and gain confidence that can help them in all aspects of their lives.

In addition to uniforms and equipment, cheerleaders often have to invest in accessories that can add up quickly. Some of the most common cheer accessories include poms, megaphones, cheer bags, first aid supplies, and hair and beauty products.

Poms (also known as pom-poms) are colorful tufts of plastic strips with handles that can jazz up routines and be used to cheer for sports events, school dances, pep rallies, and other functions. They come in a variety of color combinations and shimmery effects. Some pom-poms are made of plastic, vinyl, mixed materials, and even have baton handles for cartwheeling and other stunts. They can cost anywhere from $30-$300, and a good rule of thumb is to stick with a pom that is 6 inches in length or less to minimize the rustling noise and ensure they stay together during routines.

Megaphones are another essential accessory for cheerleaders to communicate with the crowd. Electronic and acoustic hand-held megaphones can boost the volume of a cheerleader’s voice and make it easier to interact with the crowd during performances. Cheer bags are an important piece of cheer gear, as they help a cheerleader stow away their accessories and easily carry them from place to place.
