In the early days of cheerleading, female squads wore skirts that reached to their knees. These skirts were usually made of cotton and had school letters sewn on them. Some squads fused their names onto the sweaters. The colors for these uniforms were also limited to only 18 sports colors and were often a darker shade than the cheerleading sweaters. Eventually, the lengths and styles of cheerleading uniforms changed drastically, with short sleeved wool jumpers being replaced by cardigan-styled ones.
The colors of cheerleading uniforms changed during the past century. In the early 1900s, the sweaters were usually made of cotton. This fabric made them lighter to move. During the daytime, cheerleading teams would wear polo shirts and cardigan-style sweaters. These outfits also resembled the current cheerleading uniforms. Most squads wore red or orange to signify the color of their school.
In the 1980s, cheerleading uniform sweaters were typically crew-necked. In the 1990s, the necklines were more V-necked or turtlenecked. Aside from being comfortable, they looked cute too. Some squads wore vests. These vests helped them move more freely, making them an important part of a uniform. However, today, they aren’t worn as often.
